10 Tips for Effective Jiu Jitsu Training

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced practitioner, there are always ways to enhance your training. Here are 10 tips to make your Jiu Jitsu journey more effective and ultimately, more fulfilling.

1. Consistent Practice

  • Consistency is key to improve your skills. Regular practice helps build muscle memory and refine techniques. Aim to train a minimum of two days per week. If you can fit in more, great, but two should be your minimum goal.

2. Focus on the Fundamentals

  • Mastering the basics is important for every belt rank. Spend time drilling and  perfecting things like defense, guard retention and high percentage submissions. Get really good at these things from multiple positions.

3. Learn to Relax

  • Staying relaxed helps conserve energy and improve fluidity in your movements. Practice breathing techniques and focus on staying calm during training.

4. Drill

  • Drilling reinforces techniques and improve your reaction times. The more you drill, the more instinctive your movements become.

5. Spar Regularly

  • Sparring is where you test and apply what you’ve learned. Engage in rolling (sparring) sessions frequently to experience a range of styles and strategies.

6. Embrace the Learning Process

  • Jiu Jitsu is a journey with ups and downs. Accept that there will be challenging periods and use them as opportunities to learn and grow.

7. Cross-Train for Physical Fitness

  • Enhance your Jiu Jitsu training with strength and conditioning exercises. Activities like yoga can improve flexibility,  which is vital aspect of grappling, especially as you train over the years.

8. Study and Analyze

  • Record yourself rolling, watch matches between pros, big instructional videos, and analyze the techniques. Studying Jiu Jitsu outside the gym deepens your understanding and can greatly improve your skills. Check out the Jiu Jitsu Five-O app for on-demand training and personal coaching.
